4 Ways To Enjoy Beijing’s Newest Expo (On Saturday, March 31st)

The Story Behind BlackEXPO

Entrepreneurship is booming within Beijing’s black community but other expats and Chinese friends may not know it. Why? Olivia Nadine Lamb, Owner of Tianmi Bakery and Head Organizer of BlackEXPO says, ‘that’s because most black vendors have been selling their amazing items and services through WeChat only’.

After noticing this reoccurring trend Olivia came together with Ugandan Creative James Sserwadda and Ethiopian Law Student Hannah Getachew to create BlackEXPO. The goal: for Entrepreneurs and Creatives from the black community to extend their reach to all of Beijing in a multicultural expo intended to highlight the best of the community in a fun way. Who Is Invited?

It doesn’t matter where you are from, BlackEXPO is for you! You can expect a vibrant afternoon in the hutongs with lots to see and do. At BlackEXPO vendors and creatives alike aren’t just selling goods, they are also sharing their home culture. The diverse group of vendors and creatives will reflect the unique culture that our community has manifested as we unite in Beijing from many different parts of the world.

James Sserwadda, who is not only co-organizing BlackEXPO but also taking part as an artist shares his perspective on what this event means to him, “This event is about who I am, where I come from and what people know about me… As I’m creating [artistically], I’m also creating connections and context so that people will know who I am and when they know me, they learn about where I come from and what my culture is.” Organizers, creatives and vendors are proud of what they are bringing to BlackEXPO and they believe it should be shared with everyone. It’s so much more than a bazaar, it’s an electric experience.

After asking the organizers a million questions about the event, here are 4 ways we plan to make the most out of the expo.

At other scheduled times discounted workshops will be given by Mind Body Yogi – Uchechi, Life Coach – Caneisha Berry and JINDAFIT (African Dance) instructor – D’Jack. We are going to try it all and we encourage everyone to get a little creative and stretch your mind, body and soul too. See Schedule and more about workshops here.

4. Socialize

After we’ve eaten, seen all the vendors and participated in the interactive portions of the event we are definitely going to stay. We love hanging out outside in the summer and after a long winter you’re probably feeling it too. You can find us watching the live painting in the courtyard or chatting with a new beverage in hand from the on-site café. Stay, introduce yourself to some new people, get snapped by the talented photographers/videographers (IG: @Blackexpo #BlackExpo #Beijing) and enjoy the vibrant vibe of the newest Expo in town.
